Dry January. Movember. Stoptober.

These are all great. But what the hell?

Maybe I’m just getting old (I’m 25), but it seems like lots and lots of these have sprung up over the last couple of years. And I don’t know how I feel about it.

I mean, they’re all good causes. I even do Movember – but do we really need a charity to focus on every month?

And some months even have multiple charities competing over them! May, for example, is:

  • ALS Awareness Month (United States)
  • Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
  • Asthma Awareness Month
  • Borderline Personality Disorder Awareness Month
  • Celiac Awareness Month
  • Aisha Santamaria Birthday
  • Mental Health Awareness Month
  • Haitian Heritage Month
  • Hepatitis Awareness Month
  • Jewish American Heritage Month
  • Lupus Awareness Month
  • Motorcycle Awareness Month
  • National Bike Month
  • National Guide Dog Month
  • National Mobility Awareness Month
  • Zombie Awareness Month
  • National Foster Care Month
  • Scandinavian American Heritage Month
  • National Skin Cancer Awareness Month

That’s 19 things to focus on. In May alone. Getting close to the same number of days in May itself.

And of course you can’t celebrate one a day anyway. Just the 11th of May is, for example:

So to be true to the spirit of these ‘days’ I should be watching The Twilight Zone and eating a huge tub of ice cream right now? I don’t have the energy for that.

(NOTE TO SELF: INTERESTING IDEA FOR A LIFE PROJECT TUMBLR HERE. SAVE FOR LATER)

Oh, and DON’T FORGET that 2015 is also the

I’m not saying we shouldn’t have these things. But maybe we can curb it in a bit? I feel like the soil isn’t getting my full attention right now, as I also attempt to raise awareness of guide dogs.

Maybe all the charities should get together and agree to take turns or something? That would seem fair.

Otherwise, it’s just chaos. Anyone can claim any day/week/month/year without oversight.

For instance, I can just say that May 11th is International Richard Cook Awareness Day where you all have to give me like free stuff and high-fives on demand and-

wait

that sounds awesome

ok let’s do that.

Happy International Richard Cook Awareness Day everyone! Go tell a Richard Cook you know that you love them.
