It’s Newsjack<\/a>\u00a0time again. Woo and yay. Basically that means I write things for the Radio that don’t get put on the Radio.<\/p>\n

Here are this week’s failures. Apparently\u00a0Font Factor<\/strong> got into the recording at least. It just got the chop in the edit. Boo hoo.<\/p>\n

FONT FACTOR<\/h6>\n

1. INTRO Google has been in the news this week after changing its<\/p>\n

typeface, freaking out internet nerds the world over. Yes,<\/p>\n

Google the company that harvests all of your personal data on<\/p>\n

a day to day basis without anyone batting an eyelid. But<\/p>\n

change how the words look a little bit and suddenly everyone<\/p>\n

grabs their torches, flaming pitchforks, and USB sticks. But how<\/p>\n

exactly does Google pick a new font? It\u2019s actually quite a<\/p>\n

competitive process\u2026<\/p>\n

2: PRESENTER Hello and welcome to Font Factor. The show where you, the<\/p>\n

audience, can decide what becomes the next big thing in<\/p>\n

typefaces \u2013 and which ones will be forever discarded to the<\/p>\n

Recycle Bin. Let\u2019s meet our contestants.<\/p>\n

First up, Sans Serif!<\/p>\n

3. SANS SERIF (BUBBLY) Hi, I\u2019m Sans Serif. You might know me from, like,<\/p>\n

every start-up company in the world. I\u2019m friendly, oh so<\/p>\n

personal, and not at all intimidating. I\u2019m your best friend!<\/p>\n

4: PRESENTER Yay! Next up, Times New Roman..<\/p>\n

5: TNR (OLD) Huh? Oh, I\u2019m Times New Roman. Remember me? I<\/p>\n

used to be everyone\u2019s favourite. But then Microsoft stopped<\/p>\n

making me the default and now I\u2019m just a lonely old font. WHAT<\/p>\n

YEAR IS IT.<\/p>\n

6. PRESENTER And last but not least, we have… Comic Sans!<\/p>\n

5. COMIC SANS COMIC SANS!<\/p>\n

7: PRESENTER Great. So in this round the fonts will be showing us what they<\/p>\n

can do in the world of marketing. Fonts, we\u2019re making an ad for<\/p>\n

a new kind of shoe. We want to sell as many shoes as<\/p>\n

possible, so what do you do? I\u2019ll give you five seconds to think<\/p>\n

it over. Font off!<\/p>\n

Five, font, three, two, one. And that\u2019s it! What have you got,<\/p>\n

Sans Serif?<\/p>\n

8: SANS SERIF Well I think we should use Arial and do a lovely minimalist<\/p>\n

poster talking all about the benefits of the shoes. It\u2019ll really<\/p>\n

appeal to the millennial market and work at scale for different<\/p>\n

ad platforms.<\/p>\n

9: PRESENTER And how about you, Times New Roman?<\/p>\n

10: TNR (SUDDENLY AWAKE) Huhh?! Sorry I wasn\u2019t paying attention.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019ve got an essay about the history of the English penal<\/p>\n

system if that helps.<\/p>\n

11: PRESENTER I\u2019m sorry but that\u2019s not what we\u2019re looking for. Tough luck,<\/p>\n

Times New Roman. And what\u2019s Comic Sans got fonted up for<\/p>\n

us?<\/p>\n

12: COMIC SANS COMIC SANS!<\/p>\n

13: PRESENTER Ooh, it\u2019s definitely going to be a close one. Let\u2019s see what the<\/p>\n

14: PRESENTER Oh my god, I can\u2019t believe it. Out of nowhere, the winner is<\/p>\n

crossbones. Skull and crossbones.<\/p>\n

HOLY SPECS<\/h6>\n

1. INTRO The Pope was spotted out and about in central Rome as he<\/p>\n

visited an optician in person, drawing huge crowds. Watching<\/p>\n

an old man try on different pairs of glasses might not sound like<\/p>\n

everyone\u2019s idea of a fun day out, but apparently it was worth it<\/p>\n

just so everyone could keep making \u2018Holy See\u2019 jokes. Reports<\/p>\n

that he also put on a pair of Harry Potter glasses and ran<\/p>\n

around the shop shouting killing curses at people were sadly<\/p>\n

greatly exaggerated. But what was the Pope really up to in<\/p>\n

there? He could easily have sent for someone to come into his<\/p>\n

little Pope bedroom and fit his glasses. There\u2019s only one<\/p>\n

conclusion: The Pope is planning to launch his own range of<\/p>\n

designer eyewear.<\/p>\n

2. FX ADVERT MUSIC<\/p>\n

3. POPE (STREET TALKING) Heyyyyy! It\u2019s me, the Pope! Don\u2019t ya just<\/p>\n

haate it when ya preparing your weekly Papal blessings and<\/p>\n

you can\u2019t see a damn thing?<\/p>\n

4. CHOIR SINGER Preach it!<\/p>\n

5. POPE Well, me too. So that\u2019s why I\u2019m launching this new range of<\/p>\n

totally kickin\u2019 Papal spectacles. They\u2019re called: Holy Specs!<\/p>\n

6. CHOIR SINGER Amen to that!<\/p>\n

7. POPE Now, I hear what y\u2019all saying. Aint\u2019 these specs just like the<\/p>\n

same ol\u2019 same ol\u2019 glasses people been wearing for hundreds of<\/p>\n

years? Well, hell no sister!<\/p>\n

8. CHOIR SINGER Hell no!<\/p>\n

9. POPE No, these are unique, top-of-the-line holiest-of-holies<\/p>\n

eyepieces. Each one has been blessed by me \u2013 your buddy the<\/p>\n
