It&#8217;s basically a contrivance to allow this scene to happen. And what a scene it is.<\/p>\n<p>43 seconds in and Ace is already fully nude. The remaining two minutes are simply the funniest acts ever recorded on film. Yes, I really do think this.<\/p>\n<p>Go on. Watch it again now.<\/p>\n<p>I think we can all agree that this deserves to win every single Oscar going. And let&#8217;s go over the reasons\u00a0why.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Note:\u00a0I&#8217;m using the current award categories, rather than those of the time, because we&#8217;re judging the scene\u00a0by today&#8217;s standards and also this is my blog so shut up).<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Best Picture<\/h4>\n<p>This one goes without seeing. There&#8217;s nothing better than this piece of film.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Director<\/h4>\n<p>The film, and so presumably this scene, was directed by\u00a0Steve Oedekerk. Steve&#8217;s had a mixed career of directing, producing, and acting in a whole load of films &#8211; including the criminally underrated <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kung_Pow:_Enter_the_Fist\">Kung Pow: Enter the Fist.<\/a>\u00a0But you probably haven&#8217;t heard of him.<\/p>\n<p>Surely Ace Ventura 2 was the height of his directing career. And this scene is the height of the movie. Therefore, this scene deserves the best director award.<\/p>\n<p>(As an aside, surely the best director award should go to whoever directed best picture? Otherwise, you&#8217;re basically saying &#8220;<em>Great job on making that film! It&#8217;s the best film. But&#8230; we&#8217;re giving the best film-maker award to someone who made another film instead LOL!&#8221;<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Sure, Spielberg could make us weep\u00a0for Neeson&#8217;s Oskar Schindler. And yeah, Scorsese drew a monster of a performance out of Dicaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street. But has either of those directors ever forced an actor through a rhino&#8217;s bottom? NO. And that is their failing.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Actor in a Leading Role<\/h4>\n<p>It just has to be Carrey, right? Jim gives the performance of his life, while fully nude. We feel his sweat. We\u00a0<em>believe<\/em> his agony. He makes us feel something real and true.<\/p>\n<p>The only performance I&#8217;ve seen that even comes close is Danny Devito&#8217;s Frank Reynolds squeezing out of a sofa in It&#8217;s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Bravo, sir!<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Actress in a Leading Role<\/h4>\n<p>Excuse me, Oscars? Did you just use &#8216;actress&#8217;? How insulting.<\/p>\n<p>But if we&#8217;re talking about the best actor in this scene that is female, it&#8217;s gotta be either the mother or the daughter &#8211; by virtue of being the only two present. Maybe some kind of weird experimental art piece. But he starts out wearing his iconic open Hawaiian shirt. Is there a more memorable costume\u00a0in comedy movie history?<\/p>\n<p>No. The answer is no, there is not.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Documentary Feature<\/h4>\n<p>A challenge this.<\/p>\n<p>BUT, the scene\u00a0<strong>documents<\/strong> a very funny occurrence. Sure, a human has never actually passed through the anus of a robot rhinoceros. But I believe the scene faithfully depicts what that would be like. It&#8217;s at least close enough to be judged for and win this category, in my opinion.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Documentary Short Feature<\/h4>\n<p>See above.<\/p>\n<h4>Best Film Editing<\/h4>\n<p>The editing is legitimately spectacular.<\/p>\n<p>The cuts between the family and the rhino. The way the &#8216;birth&#8217; goes on for way too long. The way he finally flops out onto the ground as a kind of punchline for the scene.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all very beautiful, in it&#8217;s own way.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Foreign Language Film<\/h4>\n<p>Eh, I guess you can watch the film in a foreign language. In fact, you can do that right here &#8211;<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"616\" height=\"347\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nD4_aDEk0yo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Like, if this was submitted to the Cannes Film Festival, maybe in black and white, with these voices over it, and with the title &#8216;<em>b\u00e9b\u00e9 rhino&#8217;<\/em> it would win every award going.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Live Action Short Film<\/h4>\n<p>Goes without saying.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Makeup and Styling<\/h4>\n<p>Makeup: Ace&#8217;s sweaty, sticky body at the end.<\/p>\n<p>Styling: Ace&#8217;s hair at the start.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Original Score<\/h4>\n<p>The use of sound in the scene is pretty minimal. But that doesn&#8217;t matter so much when it&#8217;s this good. IT GETS THE OSCAR.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Original\u00a0Song<\/h4>\n<p><em>Must&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8230;have&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8230;air!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a song. But it expresses something about ourselves that we can all relate to.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t we all need air, after all?<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Production Design<\/h4>\n<p>I&#8217;m not 100% sure what &#8216;production design&#8217; even is. I mean, the rhino looks pretty good? I fully buy into the conceit that he is squeezing out of a rhino&#8217;s behind.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Sound Editing<\/h4>\n<p>Yeah, sure?<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Sound\u00a0Mixing<\/h4>\n<p>How is this a different category to sound editing? You guys have too many awards.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Visual Effects<\/h4>\n<p>OMG YES. HE IS BIRTHED BY A RHINO.<\/p>\n<p>And I believe they didn&#8217;t use\u00a0<em>any<\/em> CGI for the scene, either. Carrey delivers the real deal.<\/p>\n<h4>Best\u00a0Writing (Adapted Screenplay) \/\u00a0Best\u00a0Writing (Original Screenplay)<\/h4>\n<p>Combined because they&#8217;re the same.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;<em>Kind of hot in these rhinos<\/em>&#8216; is a truly fantastic line.
